Simon Cowell vows to turn BGT opera singing wonder Jonathan Antoine into the new SuBo

Simon Cowell has vowed to turn opera-singing sensation Jonathan Antoine into the new SuBo after his incredible performance on last night’s Britain’s Got Talent.

Jonathan, 17, has already been christened SuBoy by fans who saw him steal the show with a breathtaking rendition of Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli’s The Prayer.

And Cowell, who last night hailed him as a future star, is convinced he can turn the teenager into a worldwide success – just like Susan Boyle, who was runner-up in 2008 before going on to sell 15 million albums.

Jonathan’s performance was even more impressive because just three months earlier he suffered a nervous breakdown and had to be pulled out of school.

The youngster, who has struggled with his weight since the age of four and was bullied throughout his schooling, is now undergoing psychological treatment.

But despite his problems, he feels he’s strong enough to cope with the pressures of fame, and Cowell has pledged to nurture his career.

The music mogul believes Jonathan, who sang with friend Charlotte Jaconelli, 16, has given him the upper hand in the bitter ratings’ war with BBC rival The Voice, which started last night.

He said: “I haven’t seen anything like that in years. He stands out with people like Paul Potts and Susan Boyle, but for his age I think he’s got an extraordinarily good voice and he’s got that massive likeability. If it goes viral, which Ithink it could do, then we all know what can happen.”
Jonathan himself revealed: “Ever since I was quite small I’ve had weight problems and the bullying was related to that. People would be nasty about my weight and say nasty words. I sort of had a nervous breakdown back in October. And at that point I left the school I was at. Me and school just don’t get on.”

But he added: “The show’s been such a fun experience. I am still seeing a psychiatrist and I hope I am on a really good road. I just wanted to go up and show my voice. To be frank, I want to show that I am more than a body.”

When Jonathan and Charlotte walked out on the stage in front of the new panel of judges – Cowell, David Walliams, Alesha Dixon and Amanda Holden’s stand-in Carmen Electra – Cowell whispered under his breath, ‘Just when you thought things couldn’t get any worse’. But the moment the pair started to sing, the judges, the live audience and around 10 million TV viewers were mesmerised.
Cowell immediately focused on Jonathan, saying: “OK, this is what I think. Charlotte, I think you’re good but Jonathan you are unbelievable.
“I mean seriously... you have anoutstandingly good voice. How oldare you?”
When Jonathan told him he replied: “I mean that’s unbelievable... Jonathan you are a future star.”
Cowell then suggested he should ditch Charlotte because she would hold him back. But he stayed loyal and the pair, both from Essex, won four yes votes.
His mother Tracy, 48, believes BGT success could really help himturn a corner.
She said: “I think we have to see Britain’s Got Talent as a very positive thing to help him move forward. We know that there is much more to Jonathan than just his weight.”
But Jonathan said: “Having Charlotte with me gives me confidence.
“We entered the show as a duet and we will stay as one for the rest of the competition.”

Was that the best Britain's Got Talent audition ever?

Jonathan and Charlotte from Essex pretty much made the entire BGT audience at the London auditions reduce into a sea of crumpled up wet faces. We heard the heart wrenching tale from Jonathan about the tough time he’s had from bullies over his weight: “When people would say something to me, it would just take a little piece out of me in a sense,” and learnt about Charlotte’s staunch defense of him: “I’m quite protective of Jonathan if I was there and someone stood there and said something to him, I couldn’t sit there with my mouth shut. Before you make a judgement on someone I think you really need to know them, it’s cliché, it’s not judging a book by it’s cover, you’ve got to read what’s inside.”
So that set everyone up for a good weep when they performed their song together – and were awesome.
Simon said: “Wow, wow, wow. Oh my god” and David decided their act was a cross between opera and pop: “A pop voice and an opera voice together, it was incredible.” We are now calling this ‘Popera’ – he didn’t copyright it after all.
Of course Simon had to throw a spanner in the already leaking works by suggesting Charlotte wasn’t as good as Jonathan and he should drop her (sharp intake of breath), but Jonathan stood by his rock and said: “Well we’ve come on here as a duo and we’re gonna stay here as a duo.” Sigh of relief.
Is this the best audition moment ever? Here’s some others from past years to compare it to. It’s possible Jonathan and Charlotte are the new Paul Potts and Subo…
When God, sorry Simon created the earth, sorry BGT, in 2007, a certain mobile phone salesman from Wales sang Nessun Dorma. It brought a tear to Amanda Holden’s eye (although that’s nothing new) and she described Paul Potts as: “A little lump of coal that is going to turn into a diamond.” He pretty much did that by going on to win the show.
